Mystery At 2nd Base

The regular season starts in a little over 2 weeks and it's still anybody's guess who is going to start at 2nd base for the Rocks. Jason Nix started today and the best he had to show in three plate appearances was getting beamed. His .176 batting average is not hard evidence that his questionable bat is ready to assume the starting role, although I believe he has hit a couple HR's (his only hits?). Giles has been ok, but he's not ripping the cover off the ball either. At this point, I'd have to say the job belongs to Barmes or Baker. Hard to believe it, but Barmes is batting .350 right now. Baker isn't doing too much offensively, but there is little question he would hit over the course of the year and could add power to an already formidable lineup out of the 7 or 8 hole. We didn't get a chance to see him play 2B, from what I've heard, he's been serviceable.

It hasn't been mentioned here yet, but one of the most impressive new recruits we peeped down in Tucson earlier this week was Scott Podsednik, "Super Pods". Seems to have really good speed and a knack for getting on base. Not sure there is room in already crowded outfield, but I'm pulling for the dude.

Sounds like Ubaldo got a bit roughed up today in Cactus league action. Corpas, on the other hand, is still sporting a 0.00 ERA so far. Dude is Bueno.....

Mucho bueno!!!! Wish we could have seen that soystress down there.

I'd put my vote in for Barmes. He seemed pretty good at the plate in the limited ABs we saw in Tucson.

Like I told TD last week, if we get a descent defensive 2nd baseman who hits about .270, that's a degression from last year, and we can't afford that as the rest of the west continues to improve their squads. This position could make or break us (the rockies).

Everything I've read seems to indicate Ublado pitched well despite giving up some runs. Will be interested in seeing how Morales pitches today. He seems to have the inside track seeing as Hirsh is hurt(fuck!) and Wells and Towers are pitching like Wells and Towers.

My guess is there is going to be 2B by committee to start the year. I'm pretty sure that if Nix doesn't make the team, he cannot be optioned to the minors. Might factor into him being on the roster if the team doesn't want to give up on the former 1st rounder.

Yep, Nix is out of options...

I have full faith that the Rockies brain-trust will get the 2nd base situation taken care of.

My prediction: Barmes is trade bait and Baker will ultimately get the job. Can we get a decent arm for the bully for Barmes?

There have been rumors about Barmes getting traded....a couple of teams are interested. Maybe the Red would be interested in trading him for Assfelt. I already miss blogging about that loser.
